Introduction
Discography
I wanted to interview this band since our first issue came out back in November 2005, the album Souls Highway left a big impression on me; the melody, the groove, the beauty of Lotta Höglin vocals and the great complement of male vocals performed by Erik Molarin; they all let me to believe that there is something extremely special on Beseech, something not so many people and record companies have begin to understand.
Beseech is not another Goth female front women band, they have a peculiar sound that makes you remember Tori Amos (hope you know what I’m talking about) but a tougher Tori, with great riffs and not so much girl sentiment but a true force behind the bands feelings.
This band could be a great commercial success if they were just on the right label, not because their music is easy to listen but because of the quality and the great amount of memorable riffs and atmospheres placed in all their albums; Lotta’s voice is easy to fall in love with and resembles some sort of honesty that many bands never achieve. I could keep writing about the emotions this band could inflict on you if you pay enough attention to it, but that’s not the point, so please read on as Lotta herself explains a little better what Beseech is all about.

"I think it is unavoidable not to compare or to be compared to other bands and I don’t have anything against that. That just gives you a hint of what sound we’re playing"
CR: A pleasure to have you in our magazine, how are you?
Lotta Höglin: Hi, I’m fine thank you.

CR: Sunless Days is your most recent work, what can you tell us about the sound of Beseech on this record?
Lotta Höglin:
We are very satisfied with the new album. The big difference from the previous album Drama, for instant, is perhaps the more commercial beat in the songs now and better lyrics over all. I really like the album Drama as well, but it’s a more experimental album with a larger range of style of the songs, then the songs on Sunless Day’s, which are a range of songs more thoughtfully put together.

CR: How’s Sunless Days doing, in matter of sales, and public acceptance?
Lotta Höglin:
As far as I know it is doing well, we have a couple of gigs planed to promote the album more and the feedback from our listeners has been great.

CR: Do you have a confirmed schedule for what’s rest of this year?
Lotta Höglin:
We have just recently ended our deal with Napalm Records and are right now in the middle of negotiating with other labels. And then we have a couple of gigs ahead like in Tallin and in Germany and so on.

CR: You have a video for this new released Innerlane, why the whole concept of that clay little guy, who did it?
Lotta Höglin:
We hired Framecore to make this animated video as we felt that it would suit the song perfectly. The story is built on the lyrics to the song and we wanted it to have the same hunting and mystic feeling as you can find in the melody as well. I think the result was really good and we are pleased, as there is very important to have a video to promote a song and an album. You can have a look at the video on our website: www.beseech.net if you are interested in how it looks like.

CR: I know you guys make and interesting mix of music styles in Beseech but I couldn’t help compare you guys with Tiamat, what do you think about this?
Lotta Höglin:
I think it is unavoidable not to compare or to be compared to other bands and I don’t have anything against that. That just gives you a hint of what sound we’re playing.

CR: There is a blossom in gothic/doom metal these days, mainly using their female singers as another tool to attract fans; do you think this is the case?
Lotta Höglin:
As long as it is being done tastefully and thoughtfully, I mean, like for instance when we were playing live at the Metal Mania festival earlier this year. We found it advantageous to have female voice, as we were the only ones that day. That would make us stand out a bit more and maybe attract more listeners.

CR: What can you tell me of Lost a song in your new production, I really like the piano work on it, it kind of shows the face of Beseech in a deeper concept
Lotta Höglin:
Yes, Mikael and I worked together on that song. He had an idea of how the piano would sound like and I put the melody and lyrics to it. It shows his skills on the piano and it became a very fragile and clean song.

CR: You worked for Sunless Days in Studio Mega and one of the producers was Cristian Silver, both becoming almost a common thing for the band, are you guys planning on ever trying something new or as the saying goes “If is not broken why fixed”
Lotta Höglin:
We are more than pleased with Christians work and I can’t think we will leave Studio Mega in the near future. We’re friends and work great together, so why change that?

CR: Why don’t we go back and talk a little about your previous records. What was the recollection that you have about your previous album, do you think that Sunless Days is the perfect follow up work to Drama?
Lotta Höglin:
Personally I think that Sunless Days and Souls highway fit better together, musically. Drama is a more experimental record and shows in what way we were at that point and is a great album as well. All though I think we have a couple of stronger songs on Sunless Days.

CR: Drama gave you guys a little more exposure, I’m right, and if so why do you think this was?
Lotta Höglin:
I believe Souls highway did that even a bit better actually. We received great reviews and attentions, which led to a greater interest to the coming album, Drama. Drama as well showed another kind of side of us as we were on that album working more as team than before due to Klas Bohlins drop out.

"I think that Sunless Days and Souls highway fit better together, musically. Drama is a more experimental record and shows in what way we were at that point and is a great album as well"

CR: In Souls Highway, the band was a little heavier on the guitar riffs, and just an inch faster in the drums, what do you think about this, and what was the main difference between that amazing album and this new one
Lotta Höglin:
I think the common feeling is familiar on the two albums and as well the covers. The differences are other composers and a more modern sound on Sunless and perhaps a bit more commercial.

CR: Why a cover, and why that cover in Souls Highway?
Lotta Höglin:
There are so many great songs out there already and to make some of them our way is just a tempting and absolute fun thing to do! We like doing that once in a while and enjoy listening to other bands doing the same.

CR: Can you tell me exactly what was the main goal of “Between the lines”, what was the process of writing it like? What did it meant to the band? What are your favorite songs of that album in particular?
Lotta Höglin:
Between the lines, I guess you mean the song Between the lines?
Well, that’s quite hard for me to answer, as Klas Bohlin was the one writing that song. But that song has really taken us a step forward and people always want us to play it and goes crazy when we’re playing it live! That’s the song that stands out on Souls highway and has been given the most of attentions. A great song in my opinion! Another favorite on that album to me is Sunset 28.

CR: The first album I heard of Beseech was Souls Highway, and it was amazing to me, mostly because of you, your voice was clam but very passionate, and I can definitely see a change a growth in your singing capacity in this new production, are you taking classes practicing new things or is just a normal process for you as a singer?
Lotta Höglin:
Thank you! I did, like ten years ago, take a few singing lessons, just to get the right technique. I didn’t want to ruin my “own sound” so I stopped and has developed on my own along with the albums.

CR: Lets go even farther back, I was reading in your fan site that there was a general idea within the band about your record Black Emotions; the idea is that the record is a masterpiece, why? Or is this idea only the fans talking here?
Lotta Höglin:
Well I actually don’t recognize this word so I guess it must be some of the fans speaking their opinion about this?

CR: I really like Manmade Dreams is a very powerful song, do you think this song has become a classic one with in your normal set list?
Lotta Höglin:
Oh yes! That’s definitely a song we really can’t leave out when playing live and it is also a great start up song when playing live. It has a hunting feeling from the beginning already to get people to listen.

CR: That album Black Emotions was very gothic, very dark in some way, what do you remember about it?
Lotta Höglin:
I joined the band back then, almost everything was set and ready when I got in to the studio. That’s way there’s no picture of me in that booklet for instant. On that time the inspiration was more to the gothic and that was also the album getting our out in the tour together with Lacuna Coil and Theater of Tragedy, which gave us great feedback from fans all over Europe.

CR: When it comes to going into the studio, in which person do you guys trust the most (other than the band members)
Lotta Höglin:
Christian Silver, definitely.

CR: The last album covers have been created by your own Robert Vintervind, when did the band decided to give him a change at the bands covers, and are you happy with the result?
Lotta Höglin:
Yes we are. Robert has a background of designing and doing artworks. It felt naturally and we already had the idea almost done before he started. He has as well been doing the layout on our websites together with Mikael, which we are very pleased with!

CR: I know that you guys from time to time go and play at local record stores in Sweden, play some acoustic versions for the customers there, how’s this experience like, the whole autographing records after this, getting closer to your fans?
Lotta Höglin:
Yes, we started doing that last year when we were on a mini tour in Finland. It was real fun and as you mentioned gave us a complete different connection to our fans and listeners! A closer and familiar feeling, almost as you’re feeling naked when everything is so clean and fragile. But I absolutely loved it!

"Beseech was born out of the pure love of making music, as simple as that. Dreams of playing for people everywhere and spread our sound worldwide! We just love it and hope to continue doing this as long as we possibly can!"

CR: Is Beseech all of you guys main job or do you have normal jobs during the day?
Lotta Höglin:
We all have normal jobs. Sometimes it is tough to find the time for everybody to rehearse for instant. It is a bit of puzzling with days and hours, but we always find enough time at the end.

CR: The Swedish metal movement is incredible and well know all over the world, why do you think this is, that so many amazing bands including Beseech came from the same country? What are they feeding you guys? And what the hell is “tunnbröds rullar”
Lotta Höglin:
Haha, I don’t have a better answer than that Swedish people, like the whole country, are more or less into music. We starting playing instruments early in school and many keep it up during the teen age and starting different kinds of bands. There are a lot of people, young and old, playing in a band or singing in some way or another.
About tunnbröds rullar....well it’s something you can eat, bread wrapped around mashed potatoes together with sausage for example.

CR: If you had to explain the essence and the reasons why Beseech was born, what will you said? And what record will you recommend to someone that wants to hear you guys for the first time?
Lotta Höglin:
Beseech was born out of the pure love of making music, as simple as that. Dreams of playing for people everywhere and spread our sound worldwide! We just love it and hope to continue doing this as long as we possibly can! I would recommend Souls Highway and as well Sunless Days. Or maybe I would make them a CD with the best songs put together, like Manmade Dreams, Read between the lines, Drama, Sunset 28. Lost and Innerlane… for example..

CR: What do you think of music trading person to person, and of the music trading via internet do you think it could be another way of promoting your band all over the world?
Lotta Höglin:
I believe that is a good way of spreading your music and to reach out to as many as you can.

CR: And finally, would you guys consider playing a concert in Costa Rica? What have you guys heard of our country? (If you have heard something at all)
Lotta Höglin:
Of course we would love to come to Costa Rica to play, that would be great! Lets hope that it will happen some day. Regarding what we have heard about Costa Rica....A country in central america, its a old spanish colony, so I guess you speak spanish =) It seems to be a beautiful country and I hope we will visit your country some day.

CR: Thank you again and if you will like to add something more please do
Lotta Höglin:
