CR: Why don’t you please give us a short biography of the band?
Sándor Hajnali: The band was founded in 1996 as Genocide. We played death metal but in a more simple way. We had several line up changes through the years. The last one was a few months ago when our founding drummer left us. I hope that our line up is stable now and we don’t wanna search for new members in the near future! :) We are bored of this change of members. We have 2 albums released. The first of them was released by a Japanese label called Eclipse Records back in 2001, the second one released through a Czech based label called Nice To Eat You Records one year ago. We have played lots of shows in Hungary and abroad! So is this short enough?
CR: If you had to explain the music proposal of Gutted, how would you describe the music you play, and why?
Sándor Hajnali: Gutted plays very brutal, fast and complex death metal music! If you have never listen to our music you have to be prepared for something real aggressive, something we call death metal! If you are a fan of this brutal style Gutted is for you! Let’s listening to it and you will know why our music is described like this!
CR: You guys recently returned from an East European Tour; how was it? How many countries and gigs did you played?
Sándor Hajnali: It cannot be described with few sentences! It was amazing, unbelievable!!! We have played in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Serbia! We’ve played 7 shows because the last show of the tour / Belgrade / was cancelled by the local organizer! It is unbelievable that we have fans in these countries as well!!! They were very crazy and they supported us from their hearts if you understand what I mean! You know, they are so hungry for this kind of music! These countries are avoided by most of the big names! People of this planet think that these places are so primitive but THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! They are very gentle and helpful with the people of other countries!!! I experienced this by myself so believe me!!!
CR: Gutted recently lost one of the founder members of the band, your drummer Zsolt Kovács, why did he left? How will this affect the writing process of Gutted and what was the biggest thing in which he contributed to Gutted?
Sándor Hajnali: It was his choice to leave us. He has no new band; he is just playing on his drum set at his flat alone! He doesn’t care for this style of music anymore! Unfortunately we don’t have new songs so we don’t know yet how our new songs will be affected by Zsolt’s absence! It is sad because he was our main song writer but I hope we will be able to write as quality songs as we did with him!!! I think our new songs will be more guitar oriented as the previous ones! We try to do our best for our next work! So expect the most brutal musick you’ve ever heard!!!
CR: Why the name Gutted; is it because of a Cannibal Corpse song?
Sándor Hajnali: Almost! You know it is a good sounding name and a great Cannibal Corpse song at the same time! So we have 2 good reasons to choose this name! Don’t you think?
CR: Gutted released the album “Human Race Deserves To Die” last year, how is it doing, in record sales and maybe radio playing time?
Sándor Hajnali: If you would like to know something more about the selling go and ask our label. Maybe they can answer this question for you, my friend! I don’t know any label on this planet who can give exact numbers to their bands! Maybe time will change that…we will see. I cannot follow and check the underground radios so if you know some radios which are playing Gutted please let me know! In Hungary there is only one radio station which plays our songs in the air but nothing more.
CR: How do you guys handle promotion, does your record label “Nice to eat you Records” handles all the sales and distribution or some of the members of the band sell Gutted records? (I ask this because mainly that’s the way they do things over here in Costa Rica)
Sándor Hajnali: The promotion and the selling of our record are handled by our label all around the world but we sell it by ourselves in our country as well.
CR: Where did you recorded “Human Race Deserves to Die”? How was the recording process and how long did it took you guys to finish the album?
Sándor Hajnali: We recorded it in a small studio here in Székesfehérvár inside 2 weeks if I remember well. It was very interesting to record our second cd there because the sound engineer of that studio has never worked with death metal bands before! So we had to tell him how it should sound! Interesting, isn’t?

"We just wanted to record a more complex and a more brutal cd than the first one! There was no special goal! I hope we did it! We hope that we will be able to make one more step into a faster and more complex world of ours on the next cd!" |

CR: What would you say is the best thing about “Human Race Deserves To Die”; what element or aspect about the album make you feel proud when you listen to it?
Sándor Hajnali: We are very proud of the brutality of it! We managed to record something really brutal and fast! We know that we have to record a better sounding third album but we are satisfied with our second cd!!! It could be better but I think it is very brutal stuff and that was the point!!! I’m very proud of the vocal parts I did! I’ve never done as low sounding vocal as this before with no effects of course!!!
CR: The album is certainly brutal, fast but very catchy, how do you guys approach every song, do you want to maybe place more emphasis on the flow of the song by adding some technical guitars while providing the brutality through the vocals, or…please explain because I seem to be mumbling.
Sándor Hajnali: First we wrote the drum part! You know our previous drummer was our main song writer! He came with thousands of themes to the rehearsals! Of course our guitarists have good ideas as well but the drum was the first thing in our music. When there is a whole song with the drum we start to work together on it! A Gutted song needs all of our imaginations! It is not just a one man job! The vocal parts are the last ones. When a song is totally ready musically we record it on tape I take it home and put the lyrics on it… in my room!
CR: Why only 30 minutes of playing time, did you guys wanted the album to have this length?
Sándor Hajnali: We think that 30 minutes of this kind of music is enough for everybody! Fast music, fast running time!
CR: If one listens to “Human Race Deserves To Die” can one say that that’s the trade mark sound of Gutted, or do you guys want to evolved into something else, maybe more technical or a bit more raw sounding?
Sándor Hajnali: Our second cd represents what Gutted should be but I think that we will record a more clear sounding third cd because some of the technical parts were a bit unclear. We’ll try to avoid this mistake next time. I hope we can do it!
CR: Who did the cover art work for “Human Race Deserves To Die”? Pretty cool by the way!
Sándor Hajnali: Thanks for the praising! It was made by a friend of mine! Actually he did the first one too so it was logical to work with him again! To tell you the truth it was made by two men because the original version is just a drawing! So my friend drawn it and then one of our founding guitarists have it colored with the program Corel Draw! It usually makes people think. It is very important to think!
CR: This is not your first album, Defiled was your debut back in 2001, how was that record different from this one, I mean in what aspects do you think the band grew since 2001 until 2005?
Sándor Hajnali: We just wanted to record a more complex and a more brutal cd than the first one! There was no special goal! I hope we did it! We hope that we will be able to make one more step into a faster and more complex world of ours on the next cd!
CR: Are you guys working on a new album?
Sándor Hajnali: Not yet! Unfortunately! You know we had to find a professional drummer who can do this job! It’s not easy in this small country! When we manage to find him we will start the rehearsals for our concert set! We didn’t want to make a long break with no concerts!! If I know our guitarist well enough I know he has lots of ideas so we will be able to start writing some new material at the end of this year maybe! We don’t wanna wait 5 years for our next cd again!
CR: Do you have any favorite song in all Gutted discography?
Sándor Hajnali: I have some favorites but I don’t wanna make a list of them! You know they are our children! We made them and they will never abandon us! :) I hope!
CR: How do you guys prepare for a live show, what can people expect from one of your life shows?
Sándor Hajnali: There is no real preparation. “Unfortunately” we have to travel long ways and long hours to get to the place where we play and when we finally arrived there we are so tired! So it seems that our preparation is the traveling! To tell you the truth we want to give e real death metal show to our fans! As good as we can on every single concert! You can expect a real fast and brutal death metal music with no compromise nothing more!!!

CR: What influences the music of Gutted?
Sándor Hajnali: Old Suffocation, old Cryptopsy, Origin and maybe Chepalic Carange! But we are listening to a lot of music! For example, my fave band is AC /DC!!! They are the best! I think they influenced me with their respect for the music!!! They will be never broken by the business!!! They just do what they want to do!!!
CR: How is the metal scene in Hungary, since I (over here in Costa Rica) have never heard a Hungarian metal band before? What Hungarian bands other than Gutted should we be paying attention to?
Sándor Hajnali: You know we are living in a small country so we have a small underground scene as well! Unfortunately we don’t have a real death metal scene because there are 3 or 4 bands playing this style here! But we have hundreds of great qualified bands from other styles! I just name some to you but this is not the full list of course. So here we go: Depths of Depravity, Malediction, Masquim Xul, Vale of Tears, Superbutt, Stereochrist, Din –Addict, Radikalis Amputacio…I can give you some contacts of them if you want it!
CR: You guys have pretty much done everything an underground act should do, playing in tiny clubs, self produce and release your first record, participating in talent shows, in your opinion, what’s the best and the worst thing about an underground band?
Sándor Hajnali: To make sure: our first cd was financed and released by a Japanese label called Eclipse Records! It wasn’t self financed…sorry. So where were we …The best thing is that you can do anything that you want! I mean you can put anything on the front cover because nobody will erase it! We can lead our music whenever we want! We can do a faster next cd but we can also do it slower if we wanted to! Of course we don’t want to make slow music it is just an example…. The worst? I don’t store bad things in my mind! They are just using too much energy and place in my brain…
CR: Why do you think, brutal death, grindcore and raw black metal are among the top choices of many underground bands, why do you think there are so many bands that play this “styles” of metal on the underground scene?
Sándor Hajnali: I can’t say anything about the others but I know my band and it is good when you are in the rehearsal room and creating new songs and then on the concerts the people just go crazy! You can put lots of your useless energy and anger into it! These mentioned styles are good for listening and good for playing on the other hand! I think it is about the energy…I cannot explain it….sorry….
CR: What’s the best thing about playing metal?
Sándor Hajnali: You look brutal and evil so people think that you are and they avoid you with their stupid questions! I hate the people of the weekdays!!! They are just working, watching TV, beating their wife. Useless creatures…
CR: What’s on the future of Gutted?
Sándor Hajnali: It is hard to say because our new drummer is very fresh in the band but I hope that we will be able to play as much gigs as we want and record a very brutal third album of course! Get me a year later and we will discuss it then…
CR: Well, thank you very much for your time, if you have anything else to add, please do
Sándor Hajnali: No, THANK YOU Man!!! We appreciate your support!!! It would be great to make the next interview personally in your country, don’t you think? In my dreams…
Thanks again and say HELLO to all of your readers! You rule! Keep it fucking grinding!!!
