"Ha ! Ha ! Cryptopsy sell out , this is funny. Why? Because we put clean vocals and we’re not playing at 300 BPM from top until the end. Ridiculous!!!! " |

CR: Hey how are you? How’s Canada this time of the year? (some “ice breaker” questions here!)
Éric Langlois: We’re doing good, winter is finally over , no more snow , warm weather and sexy girls everywhere.
CR: Cryptopsy has pretty much all 2008 booked! Canada, Europe and the USA… what about Latin America?
Éric Langlois: Hopefully 2009 if we find the right promoter with the right offer.
CR: You guys were forced to cancel the show that was going to hit us pretty close, Nicaragua. A lot of people from Costa Rica were preparing themselves for the journey; how’s Flo’s knee?
Éric Langlois: Flo’s doing fine we just played a few shows in Mexico and it was great. He’s still the machine he used to be!!!
CR: Let’s talk about your new album “The Unspoken King”; when was it officially released?
Éric Langlois: Well its not officially released yet , I think Europe will release it end of may 2008 and North America should be around the end of June 2008.Can`t say about the other territories for more info www.centurymedia.com.
CR: After listening to “The Unspoken King” I have to tell you, it didn’t sound like the Cryptopsy we got used too with albums like “None so Vile”. Putting out an album like this really shows how committed you are to just write the music you want and not create the material to please anybody. How happy are you with the final result?
Éric Langlois: We’re very happy with the final result; once again we achieved a very special record.
CR: Some are labeling the new record as “deathcore”. Has the process of artistic maturity in Cryptopsy reach a point in which we can call “The Unspoken King” a deathcore album?
Éric Langlois: No, Its only and simply music.
CR: Had Lord Worm stayed with Cryptopsy, will we still be listening to the same song structure and mellow segments on “The Unspoken King” or would it had been a totally different album?
Éric Langlois: The music would have been 100% the same but obviously the vocals and lyrics would’ve been different .All songs were written before getting Matt in the band.
CR: Reading a couple of reviews I found out that most people are actually saying and thinking, that “The Unspoken King” is really a product of Cryptopsy loosing their identity, because of all the new faces and the departure of Lord Worm; that the sound of this new record shouldn’t really surprise people because it is simply not the same Cryptopsy outfit we got use to. What is Cryptopsy’s identity?
Éric Langlois: We still are what we are .The Image of Cryptopsy changed a lot in the past decade.
Replacing a singer in a band is a tough job to do to the fact that he’s a big part of a band’s image and I think Cryptopsy showed their identity by staying a brutal and interesting band with 3 singers of 3 different styles. LordWorm , Mike Di Salvo , Matt McGaghy.
CR: In your web site Alex Auburn was quoted saying this: “Fans will be amazed by the diversity and open minded vision of Extremes for this particular entity” Some call or consider the development that Cryptopsy is showing in this new record not as an open minded artistic endeavor, but as a so called “sell out” album, an album that shows much more signs of a band trying to make it into the mainstream than actually writing music because that’s what’s inspiring you at the moment. Can a band like Cryptosy ever “sell out”?
Éric Langlois: Ha ! Ha ! Cryptopsy sell out , this is funny. Why? Because we put clean vocals and we’re not playing at 300 BPM from top until the end. Ridiculous!!!! When there’s no money to be made selling out seems pointless.

"At first the plan was to have way more keyboard on this record, but we soon realized that for the most part it didn’t really fit with the music. And we didn’t have much time to work with her so we kind of let her be on her own for the writing process, experimentation was the key." |

CR: Cryptopsy have always had problems with singers, what aspect of Matt McGachy made you choose him as a replacement for Lord Worm? How is Mr. Worm, the reasons why he left the band were cited to be because of health problems… is he ok?
Éric Langlois: His unlimited talent.
Mr. Worm is doing well we saw him a few weeks ago and no health problems just another internet rumor.
CR: This new record also saw the appearance of Maggy Durand as Keyboards/Samplist, yet her segments are hard to notice! Are you guys trying to ease her into the sound that you are trying to create or there was some other factor that prevented you guys from including her in more songs and thus having a bigger impact on the album?
Éric Langlois: At first the plan was to have way more keyboard on this record, but we soon realized that for the most part it didn’t really fit with the music. And we didn’t have much time to work with her so we kind of let her be on her own for the writing process, experimentation was the key.
CR: Can we expect Cryptopsy to continue to experiment with the sound created by “The Unspoken King”?
Éric Langlois: Who knows ? We’ll see what the mood is when we start composing again.
CR: What do you thing is the best asset the new album has and how do you think it will contribute to the discography of Cryptopsy?
Éric Langlois: The production. Like all the others. And the experimentation with extremes.
CR: We all know that “metalheads” can be the most close minded people in the planet when it comes to their metal… what advice would you give some of those people that simply don’t want to learn and hear new stuff?
Éric Langlois: No comment really, to each there own !!!
CR: Just how long did it took you guys to write and record “The Unspoken King”, and how much input did the new guys on the band had on this process?
Éric Langlois: About 2 years . Matt wrote the lyrics maybe he will have more input for the next.
CR: This new album is definitely going to get the attention of a younger generation, what previous album of Cryptopsy will you recommend to a fan of this new record?
Éric Langlois: All of them .
CR: Do you have a lets say “proudest moment” in the time you have spend with Cryptopsy, a moment in which you realize just how important this band has been for the death metal scene all over the world?
Éric Langlois: Each time we play big outside festivals in front of thousands and thousands of people make us realize it.
CR: During this upcoming tour, through the US, Europe and Australia if I’m not mistaken, how are you guys going to shape the playlist, how many tracks from this new album are you going to be introducing to people?
Éric Langlois: As headlining act around 3 or 4 and as supporting act probably 2.
CR: Well thank you so much for the time, please if you have anything else to add, go right ahead, and I hope we get a chance to see you guys live either here in Costa Rica our in Nicaragua.
Éric Langlois: Well , thanx to you and all the fans for the support.
