Equinoxio
Predominance of the Unholy
9.0
Predominance of the Unholy is a real jewel, a great find, an evil treasure of the underground, not only for the Panamanian scene but for the global black metal community.
Equinoxio plays fast, straight up black as good or better as the big names in the world; the riffs are satanic and raw as they get but never forgetting that rhythm and structure should play a predominate roll on every track, therefore providing a heavy and obscure sound that never diminishes with the collaboration of a fast drum attack and a haunting vocal work.
This demo those everything right expect from creating a single song a focus point in which you can base your first impressions on, but the lack of such a song doesn’t really affect the entire production, since its length is ...

Agressor
Echoes of Despair
8.0
A fine line between nu metal and the thrash like metalcore played by a band like Devildriver, that’s Costa Rica’s Agressor’s playing field, catchy, simple, memorable riffs that stand out for their energy and easy digestive elements.
Before Echoes of Despair we have had a couple of bands tried to exploit the early 2000 “fever” for nu metal that was running wild through the US and the world, but non as successful as this guys (in our country that is!), with a professional recording and production this EP comes to show to all rock and metal observes that we have talent, is just a matter of time and patience.
Three solid tracks ...

Bestial Holocaust
Final Extermination
6.9
I have heard very few if not non black metal albums that begin with a thick bass line, then again I haven’t listen to THAT many black metal albums so I might be wrong or even been prejudice by been surprised that a black metal band can and wants to use a strong bass line on their records; but apart from that surprise on the intro of this “Final Extermination” there are no surprises here.
Raw underground Bolivian metal, it has that certain thrash “feeling” that makes Latin black metal so appealing, something like Ammit or Goat Semen, very intense straight forward, uncompromising and plain brutal. Bestial Holocaust (really cool name by the way) blends classic black vocals, with thrash riffs and a “destruction” ... Read all

Eternal
Demo 2007
6.8
I honestly believe that with a bit more money and time to re-record this demo its rating would have been a bit higher, having said that this demo does make me contradict myself since the rawness of its production sort of help that early 80´s thrash feel that Eternal has going on.
This guys have that nice and weird blend of thrash metal ala “Bay area” of the glorious 80’s and that which helped create or at least shape the early black movement in Europe… it may sound weird to some, but this guys have that “garage” anger that bands like Venom or perhaps Bathory had in the very early stages of their careers, mixed with the catchy, crazy riffs played by early Metallica or maybe to do a more ... Ancestral
Obscurus Live
5.0
When one doesn’t have the resources to portray what’s in ones mind, one should reconfigure its means and vehicles in order to still depict ones ideas without presenting a faulty argument… what the hell did I just say? Well is quite simple I just wanted to sound like an intellectual for a second or two.
“Obscurus” is a live album, a melodic black metal live album with a lot of keyboard arrangements that simply sound mediocre not because the artist is mediocre but because they don’t have the means to reproduce a clean and clear atmospheric sound as this Nicaraguan band tries to do in this their third ... Sight of Emptiness
Trust is a Disease
8.2
All right… that’s it, I had enough of boring, going nowhere intros that really don’t contribute to anything on an album more than to name it a track just to make the play list a little longer! Ok I had to get that out of my chest before I began this review, so let’s begin.
Just between “Terminal Spirit Disease” and “Slaughter of the Soul”, I know that’s a pretty high standard of comparison for such a young band, but I do believe that’s where this local band is, if you were looking for a general perspective that is!
There is some sort of “romanticisms” in the way the crudeness of speed and aggression can blend with melodic catchy riffs, and detonate with a little help of some hellish vocal performance, that’s why the more “die hard” ... Read all

Azaroth
Queen of the Black Moon
7.0
What does it take to write a good black album? To some a lot of references to Satan and a general disgust for Catholics and Jesus off course, to others just a shitty recording and to some few some actual song writing skills and ideas; so what do we have here… the last one.
Panama’s Azaroth makes his debut with this nice blend of obscure, melancholic yet very black metal oriented… melodic black record (I know I kind of dance around the same words back there!), a sound that could remind some to a certain German band called Agathodaimon, and I believe the comparison can be very well sustained though out the entire production, due to the great amount of involving, almost rock/pop tunes that the album has, and please don’t raise ... Pneuma
A Run Through
7.2
In very few occasions a band really makes me wonder “how am I going to compare them?” yes the question is quite annoying to many if not all musicians, but I really like to give a point of reference to the readers out there; Pneuma is one of those extremely hard bands to label, some call them progressive thrash, but to be honest the thrash sounds are few and they only emerge for a couple of seconds not really giving the album a thrash foundation, but with the progressive label maybe we are getting somewhere (that’s the great thing about the “progressive” label, it pretty much puts in a box everything unconventional).
“A Run Through” is a blend of sounds and rhythms that can take you back to the golden age of prog rock...

Raices Torcidas
Digital Metal Flesh
7.5
First off, I’m pretty sure now that the best productions in Central America come from El Salvador bands, and I mean album production, sound quality, mixing… you know the works, Digital Metal Flesh sounds clean, sounds professional, and that is because it was recorded in Cursed Studios (Finland), so to get off this topic, Digital Metal Flesh is a top rated recording job.
Let’s get into the music now, yes the band description pretty much captures the essence of this their third album “industrial death metal”; it’s not like the album has a huge amount of electronic sounds or atmospheres around every song, no they tend to blend into every song quite nicely, without diminishing the death metal rhythms, or minimizing the nice typical underground impossible to...

Shadowside
Theatre of Shadows
7.5
The explosion of female singers in metal is no longer a strange phenomenon; we have some ladies headbanging on every genre (maybe not in black metal), perhaps Angela Gossow is the most recognizable face in extreme metal right now, in thrash we have the new Jim Durkin band Dreams of Damnation been lead by Loana DP Valencia, and off course everybody is familiar with the gazillion gothic metal bands been headed by beautiful women, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Sirenia, Beseech and many, many more, so what’s different and interesting about Shadowside? Yes they have a female singer and composer in Daniela Nolden, so is she any good or...Read all

Horda
Más Allá de la Muerte
5.5
It is true that Horda strives to play some complex and almost progressive heavy metal, but betting all of their efforts into personal technical abilities is the wrong way to write and album that has a big amount of talent but that makes no sense.
Everything around “Más Allá de la Muerte” is written and distributed so that the very talented Gerson Antezana can deliver a nice guitar clinic, leaving a side any attempt to actually create songs and write lyrics; only 5 tracks on the album have lyrics actually they are 4 since the intro track is just a background grunt. Let me be specific Antezana is an amazing guitar player, his solos, the rhythms he creates...Read all

Paracoccidioidomicosisproctiti-
ssarcomucosis
Satyriasis and Nymphomania
5.8
Long name, apparently it has something to do with a skin transmitted disease, so the name is long, very long and thanks to that the band has managed to create quite a fuss around the underground, they pretty much shattered the theory of a band’s name should be short, strong and catchy.
Paracocci… plays gore, but a very peculiar gore; in “Satyriasis and Nymphomania” you can find a black metal atmosphere covering every single track and under this a series of interesting tempo shifts and a weird flow that indulges the tracks into a morbid perspective rather than in brutality or gore...Read all

Injuria
Amanecer de Un Sueño
6.0
Dawn of a dream, the album title translated to English is a good description of the sound provided by Injuria; every riff has a reminiscent sentiment of past glories and classic bands, with a solid vocal work and interesting tempos this band sticks to a very hard to follow formula and manages to come out with an impeccable performance.
“Amanecer de Un Sueño” is what we may call “traditional Spanish heavy metal” great guitars solos, mellow rhythms and a powerful vocal work similar to bands such as “Angeles del Infierno” and “Avalanch”, every song is played to perfection, the production is great too, the only problem with this record is that it has no personality...Read all

Pentagram
Reborn
10
One of the greatest heroes of the underground movement that helped death metal grow and refine its sound, was this Chilenean band that started their career living through some of the most difficult times their country ever saw, under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet on the late 80’s.
Many have never heard of Pentagram, but bands such as Carcass, Napalm Death, At the Gates, Entombed and Dismember consider Pentagram a big influence, so that pretty much tells you exactly the kind of impact that this guys had on the metal world...Read all

Torture Squad
Shivering
6.0
Brazilian Torture Squad debut with this record, displaying and interesting but at times mediocre blend of thrash/death metal, the band has a good idea in all the tempo changes apply to this production, the problem lies on the mid tempo death segments that become boring after many repetitions.
The intro track “Torture Till Die” is a good example of what the entire record will deliver, some fast segments of thrash drums and heavy yet not very punishing guitars (in some places they say that this album has lyrics, well in the copy that I have, there are no lyrics), “Criminal Brutality” has a very promising intro, fast and energetic, I don’t want to...Read all

Noctis Invocat
Depressiva Vox Clamantis
8.4
With raw black metal sustaining a mellow doom sound “Depressiva Vox Clamantis” travels into a realm of melodic and atmospheric symphonies, that enclose energy and beauty within every riff, achieving a cold yet colorful environment, making this band truly one of Central America’s best examples of the creativity within the scene.
Every song has a pattern a way of unfolding right in front of your ears, from soft passages that flow right into a raw vocal performance and some depressive moods, to beautiful female vocals accentuating that doom/gothic approach “Noctis Invocat” wants to transmit...Read all

Armagedon
Armagedon en La Noche
7.0
Some underground acts never have the chance to record their work, to leave a legacy for future generations to study and grow from it, luckily this Peruvian heavy metal act after 15 years of existence got the change to put something on tape, the result is this live album.
You couldn’t get a more traditional heavy metal sound even if we were back in 1985; “Armagedon en La Noche” is a clean sounding album, a very good live recording, the guitars sound clean, and the vocals are tone in the right amount for any heavy act, the problem is that the great sound also gives you the chance to hear all the little mistakes made by lead singer Lobo, which by the way is lucky to even have a chance to sing after a serious...Read all

Kabak
Descomposicion Cerebral
6.0
When an intro track, that displays noises like those of a zombie eating someone’s brain sound better than any song on the record… we have a problem with production; I don’t know why so many bands do that, place a movie sound or something like that right next to an obvious low budget production, it just makes they sound bad.
The now banished Salvadorian death band Kabak, provided us back in 2001 with this raw piece of human flesh, grind vocals and death metal riffs transport you into an obscure world of torture and masochism, the songs are quite good, interesting guitar lines and simple yet effective bass chords, a solid drum that unfortunately...Read all

Masacre
Bajo el Signo de la Violencia
6.3
What can we say about a tribute album, well for starters Masacre deserves it, after more than 15 years playing a solid death metal that has influenced and reverberate all around Latin America the Colombians are an icon of the underground scene, therefore good for them.
14 different bands, with different backgrounds in metal are included in this “Bajo el Signo de la Violencia” (Under the sing of Violence); so, those that mean that I’m going to review each and every track…no, there are some bands here that instead of paying tribute virtually massacre…Masacre’s work, so let’s just focus on the good tracks.
The intro song “Brutales Masacres” played by Venezuelian Krueger, is a great opener...Read all

Oxidised Razor
...Carne...Sangre...
6.0
I was reluctant at first to even listen to this album, the cover pretty much had me going through so many assumptions, and non of them were good, I mean what’s up with a hot girl (that I guess is a porn star) and some burned corpses?, I guess they are burned, I’m no forensic expert…anyway I understand the whole gore and porn focus of many of this bands, and I always though of them as a joke to metal music, a funny joke; but wait there is actually good riffs in here.
This is grindcore with one of the most idiotic vocal effects I have ever heard, and I have heard a lot of idiotic vocals in my life, other than that, the guitars are nice, simple, fast as hell, sometimes they loose...Read all

Blackstone
Spiritual Waste
8.0
There is more than pretty women and oil in Venezuela, (even though for me the pretty ladies are more than enough to get my attention) there is metal, and by the sound of this band from Caracas, very good metal.
Melodic death metal played fast, aggressive and at some points very melancholic, but this last adjective doesn’t really rule the album. There is an obvious “At the Gates” or maybe a little more “Detonation” way of playing in this album, the growls are deep and covered by speedy guitars that can deploy a simple but catchy riff, the production is acceptable but for some reason it places the vocals on the back of everything else, making hard to appreciate a quite good singer; there are some...Read all

Sermon Decay
6.0
Well the description of the band pretty much says it all, the description written in Metal – Archives I mean, raw death/grind, true, mostly on the raw part. Sermon Decay is catchy and brutal; deep impossible to decipher growls like the best underground death acts do it, and with Christian lyrics, fuck yeah!!! Jajajaja probably I just lost a couple of readers right there, but wait because this album is very entertaining and brutal as I just said, and besides is not like you can make any sense of what the guy is saying, you are just going to be headbanging to the raw almost like hitting a plastic chair drum kind of raw, yep like every other brutal death underground Latin band the production is quite plastic and bad, but there...Read all
