Before actually listening to this record, a couple of friends told me that Arsenal was one of the best Costarrican bands they have ever hear; well I don’t know what happen in “Almas del Olvido”, because this album is really bad.
First of all there are a couple of good ideas behind Arsenal’s melodic Thrash metal; actually I don’t really know if this record is thrash metal at all, yes it has some songs that resemble what thrash metal should sound like, but mainly the riffs that you can hear are power metal (mainly the solos) and punk. Like I was saying the structure of some songs is interesting, and it shows that Arsenal had a couple of good ideas.
The album has a very promising intro of about 45 seconds “Ojos infinitos”, some nice guitars are playing and they sound pretty good, but later disaster strikes; “Juicio final” all the elements in this song just don’t seem to fit quite right, the vocals are too loud and they are not very good…not good at all; there is also a segment of piano or keyboard inserted inside the song (that’s actually nice). The problems with the vocals continues through out the entire album, they are too loud, the screams are awful, and when they try to go into a deeper scream, you can tell the singer is just trying to hard.
The general sound of the record destroys some great ideas, like in the song Chaotic word, a slow tempo death/thrash metal track, that had some potential but was demolished by the recording quality; all the instruments sound like they are inside a carton box, is really a sad thing to hear. Prisioneros is a punk track inserted into this album, actually surprising; I’m not a punk fan AT ALL! But I enjoyed the idea behind the song and the change of pace.
Yugoslavia is definitely the best track in this album, this song show us that Arsenal has talented musicians in the band, they just didn’t seem to get it together when they decided to record Almas del Olvido.
The big problem with this album is 10% the bands fault, and the other 90% is the production, mixing and recording of the tracks, that makes “Almas del Olvido” a record to forget in Arsenals history.
