There is unquestionable brutality and darkness in Underworld Inquisition, the problem is the lack of surprises… better put the continuous use of the exact same formula to play each song, this after a while begins to corrode the a good first impression; yes it might be heavy as fuck, but there is no real “catchy” or “memorable” riff underneath a decent drum work and a very adequate vocal work.

Corpus is pretty much death metal, but with a black atmosphere and attitude; the songs explore the straightforward and fast style of bands like Incantation and Deicide, a sort of death metal that demands a good based guitar in order to survive all the “brutality” that surrounds their compositions, and that is were Corpus fails. In their defense the production is not the best, since it was pretty much a “home made” demo, there is no thickness to the guitars and this could be the reason why their presence is so obscure.

Now on to the good side, the band has in their own way learn how to develop a “unique” sound and the inclusion of black like shrieks as supporting vocals for the deep almost gore growls do sound pretty good creating a double effect of darkness and aggression; also the drums carry a nice tempo that do step out of the more “predetermine” blastbeats and try to create some sort of alternative rhythm that saves some songs from sounding totally equal to their predecessors.

There is still much to be worked on here by Corpus, but their death/black path has some signs of good ideas and that fresh enthusiasm that you can only find in young bands in hungry bands; and to add to that they are already the best live metal act in the country, bringing fire, pig heads and blood to their live performances, inciting the crowds to get involved not only in their music but in their way of expressing it.
