I truly believe that when it comes to black metal, Latin America reached or matched a couple of years ago the sound perfected by that Norwegian wave of BM that took the world by surprise back in the early 90’s; what I’m trying to say is that we can finally, copy, reproduce, perform and even look like the early bands that inspired most of our BM artists, that doesn’t mean we are creating good black metal, that just means we are going in the right direction!
If you read Förnost influences in their Myspace, you can pretty much picture what they sound like (just in case you aren’t bright enough to just listen to the songs they have in there!!! Duhhhh) ok, so yes they are old school black, but they have some melodic parts that really help break the monotonous sound that this type of bands can fall into, just listen to “Förnost Erain” a mid tempo track, that pursues a sort of demonic ballad, not a bad song, not an outstanding one either.
This demo or EP is a pretty safe selection of tracks and sounds; these “ticos” cover all their basis with cold and calculated precision, they have the right stuff to include Mayhem type riffs, Marduk type speed, and even some Emperor like melodies (never as elaborate as Emperor but you get the idea!). I say safe because the album never includes or strays away from what the black “purist” will call black metal, there is nothing wrong with that is just that black metal bands that sound and look like Förnost are easy to find by the thousands.
Ok enough of my rants about BM!!! I really enjoy the fact that in most of the songs, you can perceived the bass, it may not be a very technical bass but it does give the songs a thicker sound; the rest is like I mention before solid unsurprising black metal (even thou in Lord & Servant they play with a nice idea regarding the tempo changes, but that is not explore more deeply through the rest of the production). So in conclusion what we have here is a nice, classic black underground record, that shows just how much we (Costarricans) have learn about black metal, but that doesn’t help the genre progress, still worthy of your time.
