17 years playing death metal must have an impact on your body and soul, maybe when you reach 40 years playing death metal your body will transform into a flesh eating beast with no regard for human life…well its cool just to dream, meanwhile this Colombian band released back in 2004 their first English spoken album (yes their previous albums had Spanish lyrics) and let me tell you, even if you never turn into the beast that you would like to be, this album will definitely make you feel that you are already there.

Ok lets get into the album, this is death metal, fast chunky, and with riffs that will stick to you like virgins to a boyband; perhaps that’s Total Death’s best quality, maybe you are not going to find anything revolutionary (even thou the vocals and the riffs are very distinctive) but the riffs will remain in your head for hours to come, it’s because despite the brutality of Masacre they manage to keep rhythm within every track and that comes to show just how good this band really is. The solo segments are fast, well performed and add that little extra “feeling” to the album, making it worthy of your time and money.

Take for example track two “Battlefields”, quite some tempo changes in here, with a great solo segment and some catchy chorus (I’ll continue to repeat that word throughout the review….catchy yet brutal). Or maybe a great example of the complexity and pure death metal style of this gentlemen could be track three “Kill or Get Killed” were the guitars possess a chunky death metal riff, and from time to time they switch to some soloing and even some technical incursions, not much just enough to get you even more interested.

To complement the classic death growls that are quite nicely performed by Mr. Oquendo, there are some sort of scream/squeals on some tracks, like in “Soldiers of the Unknown”, were they increase the brutality and speed of the track, very nice work adding this vocal variation. Some may think that a chorus that says “Death Metal Forever” is a very corny thing to say, but I can’t find a better “anthem” song that would describe the work done by Masacre on this album, and that particular song has pretty much every element that best describes this Colombians metal, pure fucking death metal. There are segments in which Masacre sounds a bit like Six Feet Under (because of the groove, like in Wrath Intense Pain) and other moments in which they are going to resemble Hate Eternal or even Nile, still they manage to have their own sound and brutality.

The drums are great, the vocals are great, perhaps a little more bass was needed, but hey I’m not a music engineer so…it’s just my opinion. My favorite song on the album “Oh My God!!” fast, with some slow segments just for the chorus to blast your face, great song.

“Victims” ends the album just like it began pure fucking death metal, solos everywhere and catchy riffs; please buy the album, I guarantee that it will help you get that neck pain you love so much!
