This record takes me back to the early years of Possessed, Morbid Angel and Death, not as good as they use to do it, but it definitely has that old school death metal sound that many love.

The Devil Speaks in Tongues is Mortem’s second full length album; this Peruvian band has achieved with this album a great level of guitar playing, the riffs and sharp, crunchy and very catchy with a couple of solos placed in between the 12 tracks this production has in store for you.

Mortem doesn’t complicate their music; this is brutal, mid tempo death metal with vocals that from time to time remind you of some black metal outfits. The drum work is above average and the production is quite good for a Latin-American underground act (meaning that is very good and clear). Mortem has that mix of South American metal that can only be explained by listening to Sepultura’s first works; a mix of brutality, with some black metal sounds and a death metal well played guitar.

Mortem hails from Lima, Perú, where it was formed back in 1986 by Alvaro Amduscias (drums/vocals) and Fernán Nebiros (all guitars), but it wasn’t until 1996 that the band recorded their first full length album with a Peruvian label and later re issue by German label Merciless Records, that album was “Demon Tales”.

This is really a good record, and album that makes you look at South American metal in a totally different way. We all know that Brazil has amazing bands, but you never expect that a country like Perú can bring such a strong metal act like Mortem.

The Devil Speaks in Tongues is a record for old school death metal fans and for some black metal fans that love the mix of genres.
