Lately I’m having a huge problem telling death and thrash metal apart; and that’s exactly what happened in “Subversivos Espirituales” the guitars and many of the melodies tell me that it is a death metal album, but Neurosis’s main song writer insist in call in it thrash metal, since he has way more experience than me I’m gonna give him this one, but I’m going to establish that to me this album has a way bigger death metal influence than anything else.

“Subversivos Espirituales” has quite a nice militaristic drum work that really sucks you into their metal; I may dare and say that Neurosis mix of guitar melodies and hard catchy pounding drum work sounds very similar to the great Vader. There are also some keyboard insertions mainly at the beginning of the tracks, helping the songs produce a bigger “expectation effect”, something like creating an atmosphere and later destroying it with fast and sharp riffs.

The album has its up’s and down’s, the first three tracks are fast and heavy, but suddenly with “Hijo de la patria” and the great instrumental piece “Subversivos Espirituales” Neurosis slows down the attack, and for some reason they cant generate the same aggression that the first tracks provided to the listener. The lyrics are very simple and sometimes sarcastic and fun, like in “Ebria confución” a song pretty much dedicated to alcohol, hell I always love a good song about beer!

The majority of the songs are sang in Spanish except for “The hate song”, and I don’t want to sound like a traitor to my own language but I prefer Neurosis to sing in English, it just sounds tighter and more fitting to every great and sharp riff.

To review, the album is good, it can be catchy and fun, and heavy and elaborate thanks to the keyboard insertions, I just think that perhaps they placed too many instrumental tracks (2 of them) in places that really drain the aggression of the record making it hard for the listener to get back into their death/thrash metal attack. Nice multimedia section by the way, a video and a couple of pictures of the band, very nice extra feature.
