A fast assault on your senses, and the lingering question… what more can they do? Those are the first impressions and first reactions to this Costarrican grindcore/death metal newcomer.
The demo is as fleeting as their grindcore influences defined the genre, yet heavy and surprisingly well laidout; with interesting and out of the ordinary guitar lines, which in a short period of time manage to include compelling rhythms that belong more to the death metal scene than to the bands grindcore side… which after a couple of spins begin to fade away, making you conclude that the band is more brutal death metal than grindcore really! Still you can’t deny the “stench” of grind, more so in the last and brief song “Turning Into A Pedophile” a 49 seconds undisputed grindcore track that will impress the most loyal fans of Napalm Death’s legendary “Scum” album.
As any demo before Thanatopsis decided to record their material there are some obvious problems with the sound, but they can be put aside when you focus only on the main song writing style and a clear, and authentic grind/death structure. Despite their obvious “personal” approach, the drum work its way to obscure, too placed on the background and too “typical”, I mean there is nothing new on the way the drums fit into the songs, and not just that but they do lack of precision, making their monotonous rambling something Thanatopsis needs to address on future projects.
Satin Angel promises many things, I might be wrong and the band could just become another “ass talking”, “pimple popper”, “anal shitstorm” that must brutal/gore bands in Latin America turn out to be, after searching for ways to gross you out instead of progressing musically, but Thanatopsis has begun on a different direction, writing out of the ordinary metal inside a sub genre that could use a massive “face lift”, still this demo intrigues but raises a lot of questions, the future will only tell us if those answers are positive!
