Some of the most difficult things to do and to be able to hear is an album with perfectly tuned aggression and melody; with force and a groove capable of engaging you at first listen, and that’s something this Colombian band has created in Earth Of Blood.
From the very beginning the album grabs your attention with some catchy thrash riffs and a very simple death vocal line that blends perfectly with a great tune that is heavy and groovy at the same time, at moments it may sound more melodic death than any other thing, but the raw drum work takes you back to a more “primordial” thrash feeling that doesn’t let go at any moment.
The production could have been better, I mean with a cleaner sound the album could have received a higher rating, but at some point like in a raw black metal album, that dirt over the tracks actually helped the record have that underground yet good sound, that makes me hold this closer to what thrash/death should sound like, even thou the “dirt” works way better on thrash metal than the melodic death approach this guys have on some segments; nonetheless every single instrument can be heard, for some reason the thick bass stands out on practically every song, and this is not a bad thing really is just different, that always seems to be the only instrument that manages to get neglected, but Mr. Ramirez sounds like a pretty good bass player so why not give him a little more participation on the songs, and his hard pounding almost metallic riffing, provides Athanator with some “identity” that other wise could have been missed.
The record is full of potential hits, like “Walk Down the Dark” the great intro track “Earth of Blood” and the simple but medically recommended “Metabolic Damage”, still there are two or three songs that are not bad but that the album could have lived without.
