War Anthems tries and fails miserably in reaching a level of brutality that in some cases hide the fact that the band never really tried to write songs but instead opted for a fast violent riff and continuous beating of the drum that could be confused as metal; but this Mexicans didn’t even got the brutal part right, the album is so badly recorded, and lacks of any resemblance to an original tune that before track 3 starts playing you would will be long gone from it.
There is a glimpse, a desire of some sort of progression and structure in a song like “True Evil”, but the guitars are so random and don’t follow any clear path, that it becomes understandable that these guys were just putting together what they thought were interesting riffs and stick them all together to “build” a song.
Axon’s problem and I believe many new brutal death bands is the total and blind commitment for brutal passages instead of actual songs, is like they first tough of what could sound as the most brutal tunes ever played and after that brainstorm they decided to build actual songs around those ideas, the final result a sloppy, amateur, empty album that really goes nowhere.
I’m just going to keep the review short because I don’t really feel the need to kick them when they are down, and to begin to talk about the production and the tempo changes will just be cruel, so please guys, War Anthems should be a perfect example of what NOT to do in your future adventures, wish you the best.
