For some reason and to many this reasons are extremely obvious I may add, the Latin scene has slowly but strongly manage to mix the influences toss at us by the gringos and by the Europeans; perhaps the brutal US sound is the one that still leaves the biggest marks in our scenes, as the Europeans take the cake in the actual sound of our black movement; nonetheless there are recently a big number of bands that are trying to stay and develop a unique sound, mixing that US brutality and “sincerity” with the more deep, melodic and “prepared” sound that the Europeans have been dishing since the beginning of modern metal.
And this entire intro just to introduce this Pichincha band (yes that’s the name of the town this guys are from and to those not from South America it sounds funny… I know, but there are worst believe me), because even as raw, sometimes stuck into an old formula Murder has some very distinctive moments and elements that make them interesting and compelling at the same time; like the racing twin guitars that at some points resemble the melodic way of doing European death metal, and what I mean with this is Swedish death metal, no not melodic death, more like Dismember death… but still not quite; and that is exactly what I mean, their sound is obviously death metal, but with traces and marks from our two biggest inspirations.
“Paying the death” is a perfect example of what I’m trying to say here, a catchy, melodic death song, that has some unforgettable moments and hooks that enhance the experience and exploit to the max a couple of slayer like guitar solos.
Despite all of this, and the good tempos, and guitar hooks, the production hurts the album lethally on the drum department, it sounds almost as if they recorded everything on a professional studio, but the drums were simple recorded in someone’s basement with the help of their reliable PC… or MAC if we want to be picky about it! Anyways, a good idea, a nice sense of direction and melody but bad production, if it wasn’t for that the album should have definitely received a higher rating.
