Invoke the Dark Age, is a mystic, cold, raw black metal album, with some insinuations of symphonic elements and atmospheric “noises” that create a sort of demonic yet epic environment.
The guitars and their riffs are nicely worked and placed, carrying more than just usual fast and cold tunes, they delivered melancholy, sadness and yes evil; the drums are sort of a march a very militaristic pounding that is good but just a bit retrieved from the general sound of the record. The sound, well the mix of the record is the only negative aspect and is a very bad aspect since the music is so nicely done that one should deserve to listen to without all the dirty layers placed upon them.
The vocals are nothing more than your average black metal shrieks, but once again they are diminished in interpretation thanks to the crappy sound, sad really, because they blend perfectly with the guitars creating a sort of diversity that increases the meaning of the tunes.
In general this is a good album, with great guitars, and tasteful atmospheric sounds; raw black metal with a touch of “finesse” thanks to the epic sounds and the fast drum work, too bad the sound is below average even for a raw black metal record.
