Very hard to get album, I listen to this more than 4 times in a row, and I still don’t know if it is amazing or simply mediocre with some nice hooks that deceive you into believing that there is more to HeXaeon than a good strong drum work.
So why don’t I just tell you what I did get. Great drums, strong demolishing segments of double bass and accurate snare drum placements; catchy and chunky riffs that disappear from time to time consumed by the intensity provided by the drums; they call it dark metal, maybe it is since the definition for dark metal is very ambiguous is you ask me, bands like Ajattara and Dark Age use the term dark metal to describe their music, and those two bands are totally different from Aeternus; so how would I describe HeXaeon? Black metal with doom atmospheres and some death metal riffs; the album is catchy at some points and confusing at others; maybe they tried to mix too many elements that ended up interrupting the flow of the songs, making them hard to understand.
The best thing about HeXaeon is the fact that you will find some songs or segments at least that will make you head bang, too bad those segments don’t last too long, is like in the middle of the song they decided to change the path the rhythm was taking and place a totally different groove, killing the flow.
I guess you can say that there is a bad symbiotic relationship between all the tempo changes and the mood placed on every song; that can be a bad thing as well as a very interesting factor on HeXaeon, making you pay special attention to every tune in order to see exactly what’s happening.
I gave this a 7.6 but it could have easily been a 5 or a 9, if I just had a clue of what this guys wanted to do, so I guess I will leave it up to you to decide if this is a masterpiece or not, please if you figure this album out, let me know
