I hate reviewing albums like this, they are way to artistic for my understanding, yes I admit it; I’m just a frustrated musician that loves to critic those who have the talent I don’t.
First of all, why is Arcana consider metal? No fast drum work, no heavy guitars, no growls, screams or anything like that. I guess they are taken as a part of the world metal community just like Lacrimosa does, because they are talented as hell, and their genre really doesn’t fit any other place, at least at this point I’m really proud of my fellow metalheads; we embrace good music.
Ok so maybe Le Serpent Rouge doesn’t have a fast double bass drum, but it does have some amazing percussion, like in “Under the Sun” a little gypsy favor is sort of sparkled all over that song; if you have heard Arcana before you know what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t…well lets say that this is the kind of music they place in medieval and ancient Arabic movies, actually I think maybe this was the kind of music they played in those times.
This album is more for the curious at heart, for people looking in the direction of a more ambient / neoclassical style per say; there is no doubt that the melodies are intriguing and the great and complex array of unconventional instruments used in Le Serpent Rouge will have you listening to this records just to get a better grasp on those strange sounds placed so marvelously through out the production.
Le Serpent Rouge is an artistic statement and there for is way too complicated for someone how thinks that grindcore is art; so if you are an extreme metal fan that thinks that melodies and sounds should be loud and raw, then please stay the fuck away from Arcana, I know I’m, my head hearts after trying to understand their music!
