To anybody that has heard BMTH, they know just how incline this group of Brits are to use and overuse breakdowns and monotonous riffs through out their albums, so there will be no surprise that this re-release from Visible Noise takes those characteristics and exaggerates them in certain areas. Having heard and reviewed their first full length “Count Your Blessings” I found little to nothing interesting on this attempt to push forward the past catalog of a band that does nothing for metalcore and dares metal to challenge them, and so forth there has been some reaction, at least in the UK where apparently the band possesses a big following and is beginning to create a sort of “allergic” reaction to their music.
Lets be honest “This is What…” has some nice riffs, but just as their more recent material the band easily forgets how to keep them flowing and decides to simply cut and start again with increasingly annoying breakdowns that ruin those nice ideas buried in between “classical” deathcore vocals and more melancholic almost emo variation of Mr. Sykes pipies. A perfect example for my theory is the final segment of “Who Wants Flowers…” when the song develops a nice, almost refreshing melody, resembling a more melodic, Goth aura that gets drop after over a minute, just to bring back the repetitive breakdowns; some might call it a lack of confidence, others will just consider the bad decision making from this guys as an anticipated disaster from the moment the word “core” gets involve in the discussion; I honestly believe is just a lack of commitment to a more elaborate form of deathcore, since the “public” already has an idea of what they are going to do, why would they try and surprise them?
I have to admit I had some faith in the third track “Rawwwrr”, simply because it reminded me of the Orchs in Warhammer 40000, and no song based on those blood thirsty animals could be bad… but this one has nothing to do with that amazing game, instead void emo lyrics cover each and every song depraving them of a deeper dimension of interpretation.
Just buy something else will ya!!!!
