If you like Lord of the rings inspired music and you can’t take another Blind Guardian record, them maybe Battlelore will suit you.
Melodic power metal with a couple of death growls; folk with a tiny touch of goth atmospheres and all the fantasy that Tolkien could have imagine is on Battlelore. This is their third full length and sadly it didn’t surpass the great Sword's Song (Battlelore’s previous album); maybe the reason for that was that the great growls and the power in Sword's Song is lost by the addition of more folk based instruments and atmospheres, the female vocals are still great but they take more charge in this album, making Battlelore sound like all those girl’s bands with epic themes and gothic looks; too bad really because this guys have an amazing talent, and Sword's Song was a mighty record.
The album does have some high points, like the first song (second on the play list, since the first track is an intro in Finnish) “Storm of the Blades”, a good song displaying all the elements the band wants to present to the audience, harsh vocals, female vocals, great drum work, catchy tunes, and some folk in the mix. After that good track a couple of songs based on female vocals backed up by a couple of not so great growls are introduced; maybe the best track on the album is the ballad “Elves of Lúva”.
This is not a bad album at all, is just that it seems that the band lost is power and anger, something that made me love their previous release; somehow they have replace their previous distinctive sound for a more “easy listening” song structure; so maybe if you like bands like Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, After Forever, then you will definitely find this record appealing.
