If there is something that I love about metal is the idea that it allows musicians to expand the idea of creating something more brutal, or faster, or meaner than anything else out there; the problem is that sometimes many sacrifice good riffs in order to achieve “brutality”, and even thou Animosity has a couple of pretty cool riffs here and there (the song Retribution comes to mind right now) they destroy or better put HE (I believe this is a one man band now) destroys those nice riffs with the awful overused and exaggerated electronic drum sounds.
Animosity is brutal and fast as hell, they got that part right, the vocals are impossible to understand so they probably got those right for many grindcore fans or even brutal death fans, but is the lack of “variety” on the tracks, and is not the songs or guitars fault in particular since they are overwhelmed by that hideous electro drum that doesn’t seem to have any other purpose other than to sound brutal and fast, it has no tempo changes, no rhythms, I mean is just the same drum over and over and over and over… yes is that repetitive.
The Berzerker is one of those bands that don’t create a middle point, you either love it or totally despise their whole approach to death metal, and me… it is more than obvious to you now that I belong to that second group, still I can recognize that there are some nice songs on Animosity, like the last track Lonely world, it appears that the band waited till the end to deliver the only song that they actually worked on, I mean it has a nice riff that creates a certain groove that keeps it interesting and yes fun, and in that particular song the drum machine actually fits and works for a more elaborate sound other than the constant insane attack that they deliver on the entire record.
If you want to listen to something out of the ordinary this band is for you, but be careful with that drum machine it could melt your brain… and not in a good way!
