If you heard A Night at the Opera, the 2002 full length album from this Germans, and you tough it was cool, then you are in for a surprise, because Fly is nothing like that album.
True Blind Guardian has a unique sound and you will recognize this band at first listen, but remember how A Night at the Opera was full of orchestrations, keyboard effects and layers of vocals? Well they seem to have taken a new and better road this time; its not that A Night at the Opera was a bad album, because it was quiet good, it’s just that with all the complicated production “add - ons” the music seem to overwhelming at times, it was too much too soon per say.
So it has been almost 4 years since that 2002 release, and here it comes the single Fly, what’s new this time around, or at least what’s this single trying to tell us about the upcoming Blind Guardian release? Well it’s trying to tell us that Blind Guardian is keeping it simple, its looking for a more hard rock sound and leaving the complicated orchestrations for another time, or at least letting it rest for a while, since only one song from this single will be on the next album, the title track Fly; lets get into that track since that’s the one most Blind Guardian fans will be listening and speculating about, the big orchestra sounds are gone an a hard rock groovy, catchy guitar is in, the percussion on this track is great and there are a couple of electronic sounds that make this very “easy to listen” and easy to love.
Skalds and Shadows is a beautiful folk oriented song thanks to the great flute played by Frederik Ehmke (Blind Guardians own drummer), worthy of your attention, Hansi Kürsch sounds great and clear in this track, the catchy chorus will stick with you for quite a while…Dream in the shadows!
In A Gadda Da Vida is a cover from Iron Butterfly, got to be honest never heard that band, but this song is nice and extremely rock & roll with some stoner drops all over it.
This single is great, worthy of your attention and money, and for the Blind Guardian fans its a nice way to start salivating for the upcoming release of their new full length.
