I have to admit, that it is fairly hard for me to write the most objective review I can when it comes to one of the first bands that answer my 2005 email’s requesting interviews, but I’m going to give it my best shoot at been fair. (2005 was the year Leviatan was borne and it was extremely hard to find bands that will reply to my emails)

If you are familiar with their previous work, mainly with their 2004 self title Dark Age record, then you wont be surprised at all with Minus Exitus; the same formula of short catchy rhythms, a dual vocal work that goes from your “traditional” mellow growl into a clean vocal performance, particularly useful on the very catchy chorus lines. Ok maybe they have gotten a little “mellower” on this release, but there is a clear reason for that, the songs are simply build around this idea of making them memorable and easy to digest, so despite of some good solo segments Minus Exitus might sound a bit “superficial” and why not repetitive… but catchy as fuck I may add!!!

Long gone are the days when Dark Age sounded like Dark Tranquillity (mainly in records like The Silent Republic); that rage that their songs use to have, departed just to bring more hooks and more clean segments, but they work, the album and every song is catchy, is memorable an fun, plain and simple fun.

Minus Exitus is Dark Age’s Soundtrack To Your Escape, when the band is betting all they got into a more melodic, easy listening sound, that will bring them into a bigger audience, but the price to pay will be all those die hard metal fans that enjoyed their “tougher” albums… when your girlfriend founds Dark Age music “cool” that can’t be good for your “macho” ego, but that doesn’t mean its bad music, it just means that you are going to have to grow up and accept that there are some things that just have to change, and that’s exactly what this Germans did, they grew up, some might like this development some might hate it, but one thing is for sure, this WILL BE A MEMORABLE ALBUM!
