Fast, technical and furious, I think those words would best describe this album, to those “true” black metal fans (if there is such a thing) this could be a bad album, mainly because Dark Funeral is not keeping to themselves all the musical talent that they have; they are displaying talent in complicated guitar lines, incredible fast and precise drumming, probably this will be the best asset of the album and dark melodies that can be extremely technical but they still keep that little rawness that every black metal band should maintain in order to still play black metal (well at least that’s my opinion).
I do have to say that the vocals are quite short; they sound tired and a bit forced from time to time, perhaps one of the only bad things about the album.
Usually a black metal album drives me into a sort of pre-conditioned state of “I’m not going to like this”, but this “Attera Totus Sanctus” has that quality of leap from genre to genre without loosing it’s identity, I mean you know is black metal, is just that the technicality, the aggression and the melodies suck you in without previous warning, and the drums just make you admire the work from Matte Modin without any question; I do think it was a good decision placing the drums over everything, still leaving room for the guitars.
The songs don’t slow down or diminish their attack on your senses, keeping you in a state of frenzy throughout it’s almost 43 minutes of playing time; ok lets conclude this review, “Attera Totus Sanctus” is a hyper technically fast black album, if you like it fast and heavy, then get this.
