A record that needs to be played more than once before you get a real grasp of what’s happening; Layers of Lies is a tasteful blend of thrash metal and many modern metal sounds that enrich and elevate the songs to a new level.

Darkane is a band that have created a unique sound by experimenting and mixing the reality of music in which they live on, with the influences that makes them play thrash riffs through out their career. A couple of simple riffs are placed in the songs just to create a base in which to lie the duplicated vocals, the technical drum work and some complex solos that stop once in a while just to create an anticipation for the next guitar/drum collaboration that keeps you in the edge of your sit.

This album has a good balance of technicality and simple song structures, having chorus and lead guitars do their job like in many other metal bands but adding virtuosity to the riffs.

If you have to, and I believe we do, you can compare their music with bands like Meshuggah and Strapping Young Lad (musicians hate to be compare, but we need to do so in order to have a starting point from which the people can just begin to understand their music); Layers of Lies is not a complex album, but is fun and done in a very modern thrash, Sweden style way that may appeal to fans of bands like, In Flames, Strapping Young Lad and Entombed.

The album is very solid, the only thing that in my opinion doesn’t quite make it all the time are the vocals, but they are not bad, is just that Andreas Sydow is not one of my favorite singers; his vocals do give that thrash/death metal feeling to the songs, but for some reason he sounds a little tired from time to time.

A couple of songs worthy of remembering and listening before you decide to buy the album are: Layers of Lies, Godforsaken Universe and Organic Canvas.
