There is a factor on this “New” Deicide that many if not everybody is forgetting to mention, I have read many reviews saying that the departure of the Hoffman brothers has just bring good things to the band, and I have even read and interview with front man Benton saying that the Hoffman brothers were the only “bad” thing about Deicide, that their guitar playing ability was just crappy; ok let me first establish this, I have never been a Deicide fan, I have nothing but respect for the band but I’m not a fan; so here it goes, with the Hoffman brothers gone and two great guitar players in like Jack Owen and Ralph Santolla, the only bad thing about Deicide now is Benton, why? Well yes his growls are great no question there, but the man can only carry two tunes, growling and fast growling, so you have a great death metal album with awesome guitar lines and solos that will leave you drooling and a singer that can’t develop and create a rhythm that fit those great brutal and melodic riffs, it’s like the departure of the Hoffman brothers left Benton out in the open, before their more “traditional” and simple death riffs at least blend better to the rhythms that Benton could carry, but now the challenge is on Benton, and on this record he failed.
The intro song is great, heavy, melodic yet brutal death metal, a little different from what Deicide had us used to, a great song and in this track Benton does manages to fit better with the twin new guitars, still maintaining his trademark sound.
This album is definitely a step up for the band, those riffs are incredible, and the band sounds as brutal as ever, but again, Benton is getting left behind, he needs to find a way to fit better with those guitars in order to grow along with the sound of the band, because Deicide sounds modern, sounds aggressive and just plain great.
