Let’s be honest, the past two Dismember albums created less expectation than a chest championship match in a former soviet country, even thou both were solid records, non of them had any “surprising” ideas or even sufficient rage as for unfamiliar metal fans to look at Dismember for some pure Stockholm death metal (yes there are a couple of so called metalheads out there that are not familiar with Dismember, shame on you, shame on you…two guys out there!).
Expecting little, and giving the album more than its fare share of spins; I must admit, the Swedes still have it! Dismember grows on you as fungus on un-refrigerated cheese, especially with tracks like “Under a bloodred sky” a song that explains exactly why this guys are so respected, putting those Maiden riffs to great use, while Mr. Kärki delivers a solid and classic performance that can only be matched by the groovy following track, that brings you back to Dismember’s better days when “Indecent and Obscene” dominated most of the talk among death metallers.
There is no secret and Mr. Kärki has acknowledged this a couple of times on several interviews, Dismember’s riffs are nothing more than an “adaptation” or better put the “assimilation” of Iron Maiden riffs, and you can really notice that on this 2008 effort. Every song carries those catchy, memorable guitar lines that make people headbang and makes this band so memorable.
Despite what might seem to some as a simplistic album cover Dismember has virtually revived interest in their very original sound; this is not by any means another “Like An Ever Flowing Stream” but it is a record that gives these Swedes a new breath, a new reason to be mad and to play their metal as loud and proud as they want to.
