With a very scary intro like demons confabulating in the middle of some ancient catacombs “Eyes of Ligeia” delivers an obscure blend of black metal and doom atmospheres that may fit better with those enthusiasts of monotonous riffs and theatrical moods than with a more “ordinary” metal fan.
There is no doubt that the band has placed a lot of effort into making the album, melodic and dark, while delivering some spine chilling black vocals, but even with some extremely interesting segments like in the title track “A Fever Which Would Cling to Thee Forever” the record falls short from really involving the listener into their melancholic catacombs of doom/black, the songs are extremely long and sometimes monotonous riffs are layered one on top of the other in order to justified the length of almost every song.
The guitars are nice, melancholic and owners of a nice tempo through out the production, the drums are not incredible but you can really see a certain degree of finesse and strength in every blast beat; meanwhile the black vocals are placed at the very back of all this, creating a sort of “screaming in the middle of a highway” effect that helps the mood that “Eyes of Ligeia” wants you to digest, but the biggest thing that I just cant digest is the lack of variation inside a song and between them all, everything ends up been a huge song that eventually has a tempo change, I guess the atmosphere idea within the album end up destroying the idea of actually writing songs that the listener could relate to.
Non the less the album has some good qualities by maintaining a sort of obscure feeling, while delivering some interesting and haunting riffs.
