Trying to avoid the wrath of the metal gods, you can honestly said this, HIM is in the worst place they could be, they are too soft and stylish to be called gothic metal, and very, very, very well done, inspired, professional, artistic to be called pop. Its true that this record in specific can called the attention of people who listen to artist such as Tori Amos, non the less the band is way to compact to be looked down too just because they are not as heavy as we expect them to be.
HIM have been very criticize in the metal community press, they have been called “sell outs” because of their soft and romance focused music (now with the MTV video they are going to be crucified), and that’s why this record is not for everybody, for example someone that fiends Madonna artistic and a god musician (sorry I just cant contain the laughter) is not going to understand this band, or someone that enjoys a good romantic candle light dinner listening to Cannibal Corpse’s “Fuck with a knife” he or she is not going to get the essence of this album.
Deep Shadows & Brilliant Highlights is for people that are not afraid of going and looking for music outside the boundaries of music imposed by fans, like Tiamat did in the past (risky comparison).
This is soft melodic good old rock & roll, there are even moments in which Ville’s voice remains you of the immortal Elvis, and there are also moments in which he gets very confused with some male pop artist of our time. You could be wondering “why the fuck is this record in this magazine” simple...we think is romantic metal (we love making shit up) this is a perfect record to give to your girl friend if she doesn’t like metal, a great way of luring her into the deep shadows of the metal universe.
