Just when I though real thrash metal was death and buried, here comes Kreator to prove me wrong; Enemy of God has all the right elements to bring thrash metal back to his feet while demonstrating that you can grow and still believe in the same things.

Kreator comes back with a very good follow up to their 2001 release Violent Revolution; just by listening to the first track you can immediately relate this Enemy of God to its predecessor. The violence is there, the speed and the riffs are all there, but everything is done with a more realistic sound than a simple resemblance to past glories; no doubt this is Kreator and this the way they have always play thrash metal, but now they are waking up and accepting the fact that the old school sound can’t be rebuild, that old school is great for one reason only, that it was done back in the day.

A more mature and some how melodic Kreator brings a record that will allow new listeners to capture the essence of the German thrash metal scene with out the old after taste, something that is quite good if you ask me since many bands are going back to their “roots” just because they run out of ideas a long time ago.

How have they grown you may ask? Well it’s simple, the riffs are heavy, very thrashy sounding but now they have a little more melody, for some that’s a bad thing, but for a big majority that tells you how much are these guys willing to learn and apply what they learn to their music. It’s true that some of the choruses in Enemy of God are catchier than other albums, but that’s just natural when you have a more melodic fast thrash riffs on the mix.

Petrozza’s vocals are in my opinion one of the best and “true” thrash metal vocals out there; always keeping a brutal and savage approach to every single scream, almost daring the guitars to play as sharp as he does.

A few tracks worth mentioning are as follows: Impossible Brutality, in this song you can listen to that mix of old thrash metal and new melodic guitars, a killer drum work and a very catchy chorus. Suicide Terrorist is great, not only the lyrics but the entire song’s “groove” and speed manage to stay in your head while you headbang to it. Voices Of The Dead is as close as thrash metal can get to a ballad, with a slow beginning and some clean vocals on the mix, the song shows us what’s Kreator’s idea for the entire album, a mix of anger, rage and melodies, real melodies, not one riff played over and over again claiming that a metal guitar should only play heavy and fast (something that they also do in this album).

One Evil Comes (A Million Follow) the riffs are catchy and violent, Petrozza cuts you in half with his voice and the drums go as fast as they can. This one is probably my favorite song of the album, because it contains every little aspect of Kreator’s music, the brutality, the speed and some amazing solos.

This albums comes to established this German band as one of the great thrash hopes, we only hope that they continue to do what they do best… good thrash metal!!
