This album may not change your life or mine, but is surely going to help us spend a couple of minutes having some fun.
The Bloody Path of God is Mystic’s Circle 7th full length album, previously unknown to me, these Germans have more history than many hacks out there, still the record can be describe as a blend of genres that may sound appealing to any metal fan but not really interesting, don’t get me wrong, you are going to enjoy the record, is just that it has nothing to make you come back for more, you know it’s not going to transcendence.
The songs are catchy, a mix of death and thrash metal riffs are complemented by a black metal voice that fits pretty well every single tune, it will be hard to describe the style this Germans play on this album, but if I would have to box them into a genre, I would say dark metal, you know that mix of death/black with very catchy guitars, something like Aeternus, maybe way more “melodic” than the Norwegians but still very heavy.
Mystic Circle claims to be a black metal band, well at least that’s what we could decipher from reviews of previous albums, the thing is that yes you can really hear the black metal presence on this album, but the sound is leaning way more into death metal than anything else, perhaps just one song really states the past intentions of this guys “Unholy Terror” a very dirty sounding black metal track, quite good actually; but with songs like “The Bloody Path of God” and “Nine Plagues of Egypt” they really sound like is death metal with black vocals from now on.
Another positive and well balanced element on the record are the keyboard insertions, they don’t harass you, they are there just to help everything blend more smoothly, as well as some slow dark guitar intros like in “The Grim Reaper” the intro one, very nice build up of rage to discharge a song like “The Grim Reaper” a more thrash oriented track, perhaps the catchiest song on the album and one of my favorites.
The Bloody Path of God has some great moments and a good intention when it comes to create expectation on the listener, like when the hard pounding drums introduce a segment of some songs, like in “Hellborn” when some mid tempo guitars are introduce by a demolishing drum work, really a nice idea that is not use as much as I would like.
