Nevermore is one of those bands that almost everybody worships and many do so just because they heard it some place, well this is a very good band, the musicians are incredible and nobody can deny that, they play a very rare progressive/dark/power metal, is just that sometimes it sounds so awkward that I don’t know if to hate them or praise them.
This Godless Endeavor is a showcase for talented guitars, complex song structure and a clean production. I was trying to define the band as simple as I can so this is the answer that I came up with “a death/thrash metal band with a power metal singer” this is an album and band for fans of rare hybrids and strange metal layers.
I really had a hard time admitting that Nevermore deserves to be in the top 20 albums of 2005, that because I HATE and I mean I HATE Warrel Dane’s vocals on this album, and in every album done by Nevermore, don’t get me wrong he is a good singer is just that to me his style ruins the songs, I will really love this band if they get a death metal kind of growl in their music… but hey that’s just me!
Ok putting aside my preferences I have to tell you that the riffs are amazing, heavy as hell and memorable; the drums can’t get better than this and all the songs (taking Dane’s vocals away from every single track) are brilliant not a single weak track.
After a lot of inner struggles This Godless Endeavor tough me that you have to listen even if you don’t like it, sounds stupid I know but when I listened closely to Sentient 6, I had to recommend this album for the top 20 of 2005; the song is powerful yet beautiful and I hate to admit but Dane does a great job on that special track and the lyrics are something you have to read other than just listen to them on the album, some very deep yet simple stuff in there.
This album has created quite a commotion and finally I understand why, the quality of musicianship on This Godless Endeavor is remarkable and impossible to argue even if you are like me and hate a power metal singer in a thrash/progressive metal band.
