Maybe the best way to describe this album will be “black metal with layers of death metal”.
Nidingr is a Norwegian band that has been around for quite some time now, since 1996 to be more precise, and this is their first full length album; ten years and one album! Well I bet they have their reasons for that.
Black metal with death growls, maybe not growls all the time but certainly not your usual black shriek. When I say layers, I was trying to present the idea behind Nidingr (according to me) of a black metal based guitar, placed under death metal vocals, and to make everything fit tighter some symphonic sounds giving the album darkness and a sense of solitude.
“Sorrow Infinite And Darkness” gives you exactly that feeling, sorrow and a deep personal feeling of isolation and aggression, the guitars like I mention before are black metal and there is nothing more to analyze in that area; the drums do their part to complement that black spirit with dirty and precise blows that sound so very raw that really gets you in the mood for some corpse paint and a burning cross; until now and with out listening to the vocal side Nidingr could just sound like another raw black metal band, but the vocals…the vocals are very “unique” giving the entire production something interesting to work with and that is a more aggressive approach to every tune, since Cpt. Estrella Grasa is not your typical black metal vocalist, his vocals may not be polish but you can certainly hear a powerful voice that with some work and training could develop into a more brutal interpretation.
This is a good, dark, aggressive record, with a touch of mysticisms thanks to the keyboard placement. A few tracks you should listen are: Mystery Of Toil, The Watch-Towers Of The Universe and the very catchy MAKHASHANAH.
