I got to know Novembre by the band itself!!! I have this profile on myspace.com, and one day there was a message from the vocalist saying that I will probably like the band and that I should check them out (a good way to advertise themselves by the way), so I did, and I never expected how much I was going to like it, there it was an amazing Italian doom metal band and it was great. So right after that I bought one of their albums: Dream `d Azur.
Just by starting the album, all the instruments and I mean all of them, perfectly fit with each other. I really liked the bass in the first track; the resemblances with Katatonia and My Dying Bride are remarkable even though they have something really original in their sound (I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s their Italian kind of performance). The second track has a cool keyboard interlude, the third one “Nottetempo” starts with an amazingly accurate acoustic guitar, and by the middle of the song the guitar work shines above all.
“Let me hate” is one of the heaviest songs on the album (and one of my favorites), and in that song I realized that all these musicians are awesome, the drums in these songs are really fast and Carmello’s growls are really scraping death, too bad this song is so brief.
“Sirens In Filth” is another great song, really heavy as well but with something extra. Again the piano takes a lead role at the end creating a really cool atmosphere. After that there are a lot of highlights like the really fast part in the song “The Music”. I won’t be surprised if Novembre takes a more progressive orientation in the future, considering that they have a lot of points in common with Opeth’s earlier material. “Marea” exemplifies this fact more than any other song. It is the longest and it has a really beautiful ocean/waves sound, without any doubt the best track of the album, it has it all: acoustic guitars, really fast drumming, and stylish vocal contrast.
So if you like good death/doom bands with gothic stains, then Novembre is the band to get, fully recommended for Opeth, Katatonia and My Dying Bride’s fans.
