Short, catchy, dark and off course old school. This Pagan Records version of Flesh for the Devil comes with a new album artwork and off course a couple of improvements on the overall sound; reintroducing the band to those unfamiliar with this Pennsylvania outfit that can surely deliver some memorable brutality and a pretty tight composition of old school death and very impressive black influences.
There is one extremely important aspect of what is perform and done in this EP by Sathanas (very simple yet it lets you know exactly what you are getting into with a name like that… yes sir a little Satan anyone?) and that is the total devotion for the riffs, for the “catchiness” of every single guitar line that runs through Flesh for the Devil; perhaps there are aspects around some songs that can be improved, but once you got a good solid guitar riff, it is very difficult for a bad recording or a mediocre drummer to ruin it.
To my ears and to many others, there are two very distinctive schools of death metal, the US side that explores more the ability to deliver brutality and force (a great analogy to Bush foreign policy if you think about it!) and the European side, focusing more on riffs and catchy melodies; well Sathanas is one of those few bands that can blend both schools and make them work, utilizing what’s best in both of them to deliver one solid, memorable album.
Flesh for the Devil might just be too short in terms of length as to be used to catalog the band, but it manages to intrigue us enough as for any curious death fan to look for the rest of their material with the confidence that their music has something more than just brutality and blasphemy.
