I have to admit that Severe Torture has some nice “groovy” riffs splattered all over this record, way more so than their previous effort, that focused more on aggression than in memorable songs. But for some reason all the songs despite the nice riffs and interesting tempos, lack that final touch that could pushed then beyond the “nice” realm and into the “fucking awesome” kingdom; making “Sworn Vengeance” a nice album, but nothing worthy of ordering over the internet because you absolutely HAVE to have it!
This Dutch band has created a name for themselves, and this 4th full length is no amateur work let me tell you; the production, the song structure clearly show that we are talking about a truly professional outfit here, sadly the record promises so much but ends up disappointing after a mid tempo attack cover in great ideas, almost perfect executions but with a sort of lack on energy and simply put guts… yes that’s it, the record sounds perfect but there are no guts in these songs, they all have this promising riffs, those nice groovy or catchy rhythms but at the end of the day, there is this mediocre attempt for delivering death metal that makes you wonder, just what went through this guys heads when it came time to “get brutal!!!”.
If you had to compare “Sworn Vengeance” it will be fare to talk about Blood Red Throne, the latest BRT that is! both produce that same “feeling” in me… a promising sound with a lack of aggressiveness; hell maybe is just me, this album could be confusing if you don’t pay enough attention to it, so spin it a couple of times and let me know!
