Epic and heavy as a well crafted battle axe; Skyforger first full length album officially released by Mascot Records in 1998 is a great piece of folk art as well as fantastic metal album.

The themes in which Skyforger submerges the listener (even if all the lyrics are in Latvian) is a medieval struggle between the native tribes of the Balkans and the Christian invaders of the 13th century, even if you don’t understand a word of what they are saying, the music will carry you into a medieval metal scenario, full of live pictures of ancient fights and resentment.

“Kauja Pie Saules” is a collage of sounds, atmospheres, folk instruments and believes; the band travels through folk music into rock guitars and metal sincerity; the black vocals resembling the well know Norwegian black metal scene is nicely accommodated next to the clean vocals that have all that folkish sound that provides color to every tune that follows.

The album starts with a folk chant that shows their intentions from the very beginning, right after that melodic and harmonious start, the black metal vocals and the heavy metal guitars are unleashed; the drums are raw just like in a traditional black band, but this drums can perform under any speed and carry complicated tempos that are displayed by a solid bass line; Skyforger uses different folk instruments to increase the depth of the songs, percussion, flutes and other instruments that give the songs that “epic” and melancholic smell that only this traditional instruments could provide.

A very “charismatic” album, this is one of those works that you need to calmly appreciate in order to fully appreciate, still the record is heavy and very appealing for black metal fans.
