Classic old school death metal, furious deep growls and a solid tendency for speed make this second album from Germans Sudden Death a decent attempt at a much desired exposure.

“Rethroned” has a very South American smell to it, the riffs are chunky, aggressive and the vocals sound just like Masacre (Colombia) or perhaps Krisiun (Brasil), and that “smell” is what gives me the best impression about this guys, whom according to their bio have been playing since 1990, but have only released two full lengths, still the longevity of their existence pretty much explains the old school sound, they are old school!!!

There is just one problem with “Rethroned” and is the lack of hocks or memorable moments, I mean the speed and the great vocals by themselves can’t save the album from passing you by without leaving some sort of desire for pushing that play button more than twice in one day; they try thou, with tiny grooves inserted in tracks like “Fear, Black Pieces and To bleed” this last one including some bass soloing, very short but still giving a little extra “flavor” to the track.

As the album progresses so those the breaks or tempo changes, I don’t know if this can be consider a good thing because the songs begin to fall apart from the insertion of tiny grooves, fast abrupt rhythm changes and the occasional solo from what sounds like a very good drummer, a very “organic” drum that gives the songs some extra brutality by sounding kind of dirty but maintaining a great level of precision… the double bass drum work is insane, it sounds almost programmed into the tracks, what ever the case Sacha comes out looking pretty good, nice drummer!

To conclude, the album has the right idea and the right talent, but every time Sudden Death manages to get something going they change the direction, and so those one’s attention.
