Blowjobs from strangers, motorbikes, swords, conquering, drinking and smoking. If you have a pair of balls and the last sentence didn’t make you want to buy this album then I suggest you get yourself checked. This album manages to incorporate all manners of manly things without sounding gay; Manowar should take lessons from these guys.
But it’s no wonder that ‘these guys’ are so damn good, most of the members come from arguably the greatest metal band of the last decade, Strapping Young Lad. For ‘When you were shouting at the Devil…’ they kept the silliness/stupidity of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing (SYL’s debut) and took away the sloppy (yet amusing) industrial sound and replaced it with a fine coating of thrash. But with Devin Townsend (ex-SYL vocalist) producing the album, you won’t hear the ‘we recorded this album in a cardboard box’ effect that you would hear in Exodus’ Bonded by Blood album. Some people will just say that Zimmers Hole are SYL with a different name, it can be hard to argue against this seeing as the vocalist is Chris ‘The Heathen’ Valagao, who was Devin’s backing vocalist from his solo albums. But the ear crunching anger is missing, and we are left with some of the cheesiest and most comical lyrics that Canada has exported since the last Celine Dion album.
Gene Hoglan is one of the key reasons to buy this album, his constant use of the double base on the opening track is like being repeatedly punched in the face, but you love every second of it. Jed Simon’s cheesy but grand guitar solos are also an album highlight. This could also be the last time that we see Byron Stroud (bass) for a while, as his ‘other band’, Fear Factory are going into writing/recording mode soon.
This album is pretty much non-stop metal and comedy but it never seems to become stale or yawn inducing. More interest is even sparked when Nathan Explosion of Dethklok fame has a guest appearance in The Vowel Song. And if you’re lucky enough to dwell within Europe then you get the calming acoustic bonus track entitled ‘Fuck My Aching Tits’.
Many people mock Canada, and for good reasons, but now we can ignore the fact that they sell milk in bags, thanks to the funniest album of the year.
