Did you know that one of the original members of Emperor plays in this band? Well I didn’t, as a matter of fact I never knew this guy Haavard Ellefsen to have had any impact on what Emperor did for the BM scene, but that could just be, because my BM history is very thing this days and the fact that the guy was only in the band for little over a year. So interesting facts aside, what the hell does Mortiis (Coincidently the nick of Mr. Ellefsen and the name of the band) sounds like… well it is simple and complicated at the same time, and running the risk of complicating things in an unnecessary way, which makes everything more fun and interesting than they really are, I would have to say, that despite a catchy electronic beat that carries some extremely familiar tunes, this “remix” album (I should have mention that earlier I presume) is so full is pink undertones that could make any Britney Spears fan blush.

You might be asking yourself if my previous statement has any significant background in it, an it does, at least according to me; and after all this is an album review from my perspective, so objectivity aside (which I don’t believe is possible when critiquing art); “Some Kind of Heroin” is nothing more than a highly refined expensive club jukebox for heroin takers and hot swallow starlets. The music is monotonous and so superficially package that is hard to even think there is any sort of intelligence inside the lyrics, which they might have, but by the simple injection of the common sounds and effects a “respectable” remix album should have is hard to focus on what they are saying.

Mortiis has close to 15 years playing music and releasing albums, and “Some Kind of Heroin” is perhaps the worst work they could have think of to promote a “Best of/Compilation”. Without having heard their previous work and solely basing my opinion on this work, I have to say, that this is perhaps one of the worst releases that was probably born out of a good idea about releasing a “different” kind of record; the album turned out to be swallow and hopefully extremely unrepresentative to what the band might be actually worth. So stay away from this and try to find a real Mortiis album, and not this aberration.
