If you had the chance of listening to Back in the Grave (Orenda’s debut in 2006) you wont find a certain path of progression towards greatness from this Bulgarians, but you will understand that the band is obsesses in developing a dark, melancholic, atmospheric black metal, that deserves attention and patience.
The Funeral is a nice, very “logical” continuation to that previously mention debut record, emphasizing what seems to be what the bands considers more important and profound about their art… and that is atmosphere; depressive and desperate atmospheres that blend in an intriguing manner with a mind tempo black metal, that even as slow as it may sound in certain segments still comes out pouring a very heavy and raw sound, giving Orenda an interesting and a heavy loaded “personality”.
The lyrics have improved also, showing a more mature and a better understanding of the English language, which they play with and transform into anthems of desperation and solitude.
Orenda can’t be listen without compromising yourself to it from the very beginning, if you don’t, then it will just end up boring you and the riffs might even sound extremely monotonous, an assumption that is not totally untrue because sometimes they are! But they serve a bigger purpose, and that is to create a sensation an entirety of bleak and obscure feelings that end up sounding like a scream of hate covered in tears
