Susperia started out, playing maybe not a revolutionary kind of black/thrash metal, but their sound was acquiring a unique aspect to it that would have eventually made them easily recognizable and respected as an extreme metal act… but something happened on the way and Cut from Stone despite been catchy as hell sounds more like a Disturbed album…an extremely good and “metal” Disturbed record but nu metal after all.
This is not Susperia’s first attempt at a “mainstream sound”, having release a bad Pantera mellow clone in “Unlimited” during 2004, you couldn’t really expect them to come back and give us something other than more “radio friendly” sounds and vocals. My biggest problem with this album and this band is not that they progress in such a manufacture way (I have to admit I enjoy some Disturbed, Rammstein and why not some Korn from time to time), my problem with the band is how easily they forgot or dissolved their previous sound, and it’s not like their first two records where made 10 years ago and the band is reconstituting itself now after years of disbandment, no those two decent records where just made in 2001 and 2002, but suddenly in 2004 and 2007 the band has a totally new sound, making me suspect that their goal is not to make metal but to make rentable music.
The production is clear… great by my lack of technical knowledge about this very important phase of record development; it is a production worthy of a mainstream album; don’t get me wrong there are nice thrasy riffs all over the record, and some songs are quite “seductive” easily listening are therefore very digestible. Cut from Stone is one of those albums design for long drives and background amusement, if you try to get too deep into it you’ll see the ugly face of superficiality and fake aggression.
